City’s Under-18s served up a magnificent seven to overpower our Sunderland counterparts with skipper Cole Palmer and Alex Robertson both claiming hat-tricks.
In what was a dominant all-round display at the Academy of Light, Gareth Taylor’s young charges maintained our iron grip at the top of the Under 18 Premier League North table in emphatic fashion.
And a ruthless performance was sealed by a late goal from D’Margio Wright-Phillips to cap a fine afternoon’s work by City.
City looked to take the game to the hosts from the off and our probing yielded opening dividends just before the half hour.
Josh Wilson-Esbrand was the architect and Cole Palmer latched onto his assist before the skipper finished in style to give Taylor’s side the lead.
Within five minutes we had doubled our advantage as Palmer struck again, with Oscar Bobb the provider this time.
City then ramped up the intensity after the break, bagging another five goals with Palmer and Alex Robertson leading the way as each claimed an individual treble.
Midfielder Robertson struck twice within 10 minutes of the restart before Palmer then wrapped up his own hat-trick by dispatching our fifth goal on the hour.
Robertson followed suit by sealing his own deserved treble on 71 minutes before D’Margio Wright-Phillips rounded off another marvellous all-round performance by registering our seventh goal two minutes later.
How we lined up
Josh McNamara was in goal, shielded by a back four of Luke Mbete, Finley Burns, Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Kawku Oduroh.
Alex Robertson, CJ Egan-Riley and skipper Cole Palmer formed the midfield trio while D’Margio Wright-Phillips, Oscar Bobb and Liam Delap were deployed up-front.
What it means
The victory ensured that City remain top of the table in the Northern section of the Under 18 Premier League table. It was our ninth win from 11 league games with City leading the pack on 27 points.
We are back in Under 18 Premier League action next Saturday when we play host to West Brom.
Kick-off at the CFA is 12.30pm.
