Dele-Bashiru: Playing style an advantage for U21s

UP FOR THE CUP: City's U21s are in the hat for the Leasing.com Round of 32

UP FOR THE CUP: City's U21s are in the hat for the Leasing.com Round of 32

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru believes City’s comfort on the ball will be crucial in the knockout stages of the Leasing.Com Trophy.

Paul Harsley’s U21 side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers in their final Northern Group F game, but still topped the group thanks to previous victories against Bradford City and Rochdale.

The youngsters are yet to discover their Round of 32 fate, but Dele-Bashiru feels their possession-based style and tendency to keep the ball on the floor will beneit them in the latter stages.

“I think we have a good chance”, said the 18-year-old midfielder.

“We’ve got a good set of lads, we’re all very talented and the thing is we like playing football.

“Most of the teams we’ve played up until now, they’re not really used to that, so I think that could be an advantage.”

Lining up against first team opposition, the U21s produced two impressive performances that belied their years against Bradford and Rochdale.

The 3-1 loss at the University of Bolton Stadium, however, was a reminder of the task they face against seasoned professionals.

Dele-Bashiru felt City were their own worst enemies at times, but insists the team will learn from it and be better for the experience.

“We made some silly mistakes at the back that cost us,” he reflected.

“(But) I thought we played well and controlled the game.

“Overall it was a good game and a good experience, hopefully we can kick on after this.”

Paul Harsley’s young charges are back in Premier League 2 action this Friday evening when they take on Leicester City at the Academy Stadium. You can buy your tickets here.
